Over the past four decades, Sri Lanka’s cricket stadiums have evolved from basic sports grounds into world-class, future-ready venues. At the heart of this transformation is DIMO, a pioneer in stadium floodlighting, whose innovations have not only illuminated the game but also elevated the overall spectator experience. From hosting day/night international matches to supporting high-definition broadcasts, DIMO’s contributions have played a key role in redefining how cricket is played and enjoyed across the country. This journey reflects more than technological progress: it mirrors the country’s transition from conventional sports infrastructure to globally benchmarked, future ready venues.

A JOURNEY OF PIONEERING FIRSTS TO NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION

DIMO’s association with sports lighting dates back to the 1980s when it captured both national and international attention by installing Sri Lanka’s first, and one of Asia’s pioneering, stadium floodlighting systems at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS).

This landmark project positioned Sri Lanka among a small group of nations capable of hosting day/night international cricket at the time while establishing DIMO as a technical pioneer.

The company later extended its footprint beyond Colombo by delivering the flood- lighting system for the Pallekele Inter- national Cricket Stadium (PICS), a strategically important venue that hosts major cricketing events and promotes sports tourism.

As global stadiums began transitioning to LED based lighting technologies, Sri Lanka Cricket followed suit. DIMO once again led this shift by moder- nising the country’s sports infrastructure through the installation of Sri Lanka’s first International Cricket Council (ICC) compli- ant LED floodlighting system at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium (RDICS) in 2023.

In 2025, the company completed the con- version of RPICS into the country’s second LED floodlight equipped international stadium. DIMO’s most recent milestone was the completion of a state-of-the-art LED flood- lighting system at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC), making it Colombo’s second and Sri Lanka’s fifth venue capable of hosting international day/night matches.

R. PREMADASA INTERNATIONAL CRICKET STADIUM

At RPICS, DIMO undertook a full-scale transformation – executing the design, sup- ply, installation, testing, commissioning and long-term maintenance of a new LED flood- lighting system while dismantling the existing conventional infrastructure. The project involved installing 660 high- performance LED floodlights for the main field, 72 additional fixtures for practice nets with new high masts and cabling lighting control systems.

All associated civil, mechanical and electrical works were executed including the erection of new 58 meter high heavy-duty steel towers. The cabling network alone spanned 1,780 meters at ground level and 56,100 metres within the towers, ensuring system resilience and uninterrupted performance.

DIMO designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the floodlighting system for PICS, marking its first major floodlighting project outside Colombo. The installation of the floodlighting system was completed prior to the 2011 Cricket World Cup, with floodlighting fixtures installed across four towers around the ground.

DIMO recently undertook the refurbishment of the floodlighting system prior to the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup where extensive works were carried out to improve the existing installation and enhance the lighting levels of the stadium.

The LED floodlighting project at RDICS represented a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s sports infrastructure modernization. Approximately 54 kilometres of cables were installed around the ground, as well as with- in the towers.

SINGHALESE SPORTS CLUB

At SSC, DIMO installed 630 high-performance LED fixtures across six high mast towers, supported by an extensive 62 kilo- metre cabling network and a centralised lighting control system. The project positioned SSC as a fully compliant international day/night venue, strengthening Colombo’s capacity to host high profile matches and events.

TRANSFORMATION TO STATE-OF-THE-ART LED FLOODLIGHTING SYSTEMS

The transition from metal halide to LED floodlighting has fundamentally enhanced Sri Lanka’s cricketing experience. Uniform illumination, consistent color temperature and advanced glare control now support 4K and 8K broadcasts, delivering superior visual clarity to stadium audiences and global viewers alike.

Flicker free technology has improved slow motion (slo-mo) replays and the accuracy of tools such as the Decision Review System (DRS) while significantly enhancing player safety during night matches. Operationally, LED systems offer longer lifespans, lower energy consumption, reduced heat emission and minimal maintenance with the added environmental advantage of mercury free disposal.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND EXECUTION EXCELLENCE

DIMO’s design approach prioritized full compliance with ICC illumination standards while adapting each solution to the unique geometry and usage patterns of individual stadiums.

Advanced photometric simulations, structural engineering precision and rigorous safety protocols ensured consistent international level performance. The supplier ecosystem included globally recognized manufacturers such as AEC Illuminazione and Transrail, alongside locally manufactured components such as power panels produced under DIMO Lumin, demonstrating a balanced integration of global technology and local engineering expertise.

LONG-TERM RELIABILITY THROUGH AFTER SALES SUPPORT

DIMO’s in-house lighting solutions team managed the complete project lifecycle – from concept to commissioning and beyond – while contributing to foreign exchange savings.

Supported by specialized technical teams and a robust after sales infrastructure, DIMO ensured seamless execution, preventive maintenance and long-term system reliability.

Post-installation support includes routine inspections, preventive maintenance programmes, specialized diagnostics, software optimization, control system updates and periodic hardware audits, ensuring high uptime and consistent performance across all venues.

The successful delivery of these stadium floodlighting projects signifies DIMO’s role in redefining Sri Lanka’s sports infrastructure, thereby positioning the company as a trusted national partner in delivering future ready, globally benchmarked solutions. DIMO has delivered flood lighting solutions to four out of Sri Lanka’s five internationally recognized cricket stadiums.
