Switzerland’s Quantum Leap Begins at ETH Zurich

Quantum computing has long existed at the edge of what is technologically possible, promising to tackle problems that are beyond the practical reach of conventional computers. That future is now taking shape in Switzerland, where IBM and Lockheed Martin have announced plans to establish a Swiss Quantum Innovation Hub at ETH Zurich. At the centre of the initiative will be Switzerland’s first IBM Quantum System Two, creating a new platform for researchers, industry and students to explore the possibilities of quantum computing.
The hub will bring together IBM’s quantum computing technology and expertise with Lockheed Martin’s experience in advanced engineering and complex computational challenges. Researchers at ETH Zurich and other Swiss institutions will have access to the quantum system as they investigate applications in areas including optimisation, materials science and scientific computing. The initiative will also support education and skills development, helping researchers and students gain practical experience with quantum technologies while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
More than simply introducing a new computer, the initiative represents an effort to build an ecosystem around an emerging technology. Quantum computing is still developing, but partnerships that connect researchers, businesses and technology providers can help turn experimental capabilities into practical applications. As the new hub takes shape at ETH Zurich, Switzerland is positioning itself as a place where the next generation of computing can be explored not only in laboratories, but through collaboration that could influence how complex problems are solved in the years ahead.
