Sri Lanka’s Healthcare Steps into the Future with Technology

Sri Lanka’s healthcare system is steadily embracing technology, building on its strong foundation of universal access and skilled medical professionals. As DIMO Executive Director Wijith Pushpawela notes, global exposure of Sri Lankan doctors, many trained with advanced tools overseas, has been a major driver in raising local standards of care.

Key areas of progress include diagnostic imaging upgrades, such as the adoption of 3-Tesla MRI scanners and advanced CT technology, delivering faster and more accurate results. On the treatment side, innovations like laser procedures for glaucoma and minimally invasive surgeries are improving patient outcomes while reducing recovery time.

But challenges remain. High costs, heavy taxes on equipment, and long regulatory delays slow down adoption. The brain drain of doctors and technicians adds further strain, especially in rural areas. Limited insurance coverage also makes private care less affordable, pushing more patients into an already stretched public system.

Pushpawela stresses the need for public–private partnerships, better insurance schemes, and smarter policy to accelerate progress. With the right investment and collaboration, Sri Lanka has the potential not only to modernize healthcare nationwide but also to emerge as a regional hub for health tourism.
