Bosch Begins Real-World Trials of Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Bus System in Madrid

Madrid, Spain, is now home to the first real-world trial of Bosch's new hydrogen fuel-cell system for buses, marking a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable public transport. The technology is being tested in an Irizar bus operated by Spanish transit company Alsa, with the aim of demonstrating how hydrogen-powered mobility can support the growing demand for zero-emission passenger transport.


At the heart of the trial is Bosch's FCPM C190 fuel-cell system, which delivers 190 kW of continuous power while offering driving ranges of over 1,000 kilometres on a single hydrogen refill. With re-fuelling taking just 10 to 15 minutes, the system is well suited for long-distance and intercity bus operations where battery-electric vehicles may face charging limitations. Bosch believes fuel-cell technology complements battery-electric mobility by providing greater flexibility for routes with high daily mileage.


The project also reflects Bosch's broader commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy. Alongside fuel-cell systems for commercial vehicles, the company is developing hydrogen production technologies, hydrogen engines and related infrastructure solutions, reinforcing its vision of hydrogen as a key enabler of low-carbon transportation. As cities across Europe accelerate their transition towards cleaner public transit, Bosch's latest trial demonstrates the growing role hydrogen can play in the future of sustainable mobility.
