Formula 1 has a way of turning a single race into a statement about the future. At the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new Madring circuit, 20-year-old Kimi Antonelli delivered exactly that. The Mercedes driver secured his eighth Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season, beating Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in a race where strategy proved just as decisive as speed. A Virtual Safety Car created the turning point, allowing Mercedes to make a well-timed pit stop while Norris lost valuable ground after a slow tyre change.

Antonelli's victory extends his advantage in the Drivers’ Championship to 81 points, while teammate George Russell finished fifth. Verstappen took second, just 4.351 seconds behind, with Norris completing the podium. Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Yet the result was far from straightforward. Antonelli battled tyre management, track-limit concerns and even reported unusual steering behaviour during the race. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Leclerc spent much of the afternoon leading as the team gambled on a late Safety Car that never arrived.

By the chequered flag, Antonelli had turned a strategically complicated afternoon into another defining victory.

His rise is becoming one of the defining stories of the 2026 season: a new generation is not simply arriving in Formula 1 it is beginning to take control of it. The championship now moves towards Azerbaijan on September 24–26, with Antonelli carrying significant momentum into the next phase of the title fight.
