AI Is Hungry for Power and Renewable Energy Is Racing to Feed It

Artificial intelligence may exist in the digital world, but its rapid growth is creating a very physical challenge: powering the infrastructure behind it.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in everyday technology, the demand for data centers is rising, and with it, the need for vast amounts of energy, water, land and materials. Microsoft, which published its 2026 Environmental Sustainability Report in July, says the AI transition is reshaping not only technology, but also the environmental systems supporting it.


The challenge is already visible in Microsoft's own operations. In the Financial Year 2025, the company matched 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy, with more than 90% of the renewable energy applied toward its target coming from contracted projects such as power purchase agreements. Yet the story is not simply one of progress. Microsoft's total emissions increased 25% year over year, driven primarily by the expansion of its data-centre infrastructure. The company notes that sustainability solutions are not scaling quickly enough to meet the pace of demand, highlighting the need for more resilient grids, cleaner energy and more efficient infrastructure.


The bigger question is therefore no longer whether AI will consume more energy, but how responsibly that energy will be produced. As AI accelerates, the race to build a cleaner, more resilient energy system is accelerating alongside it.
