A Century of Wonder: ZEISS Planetarium Jena Reopens with Next-Generation Technology
A century after opening its doors as the world's first operational planetarium, the ZEISS Planetarium "Jena" has entered a new era. Following an extensive modernization, the iconic landmark now combines its historic legacy with state-of-the-art technology, offering visitors one of the most advanced planetarium experiences in the world. At its core, the renowned ZEISS Universarium star projector has been comprehensively refurbished, featuring upgraded fixed stars, new star plates, LED-illuminated planets and meticulously serviced optical, mechanical and electrical components to ensure exceptional projection quality for years to come.
One of the most significant additions is a new digital projection system powered by eleven ZEISS VELVET 4K projectors, delivering stunning 8K full-dome visuals. With an industry-leading contrast ratio of 1:5,000,000, the system produces deep black skies, brilliant stars and immersive imagery that transforms every show into a captivating experience. Visitors can enjoy both digital full-dome presentations and hybrid shows that combine the classic optical star projector with modern digital technology.
The reopening also introduces a unique 3D sound system, the only one of its kind in Europe, creating an immersive audiovisual environment that enhances science communication, education and entertainment alike. Originally developed in Jena by Walther Bauersfeld, the world's first planetarium projector revolutionized astronomy education and inspired the construction of planetariums around the globe. Today, 100 years later, ZEISS continues to build on that legacy by pioneering new technologies that keep dome experiences relevant for future generations.
